Here you will find answers to the most frequently asked questions about my translation and interpreting services. If your question isn’t listed, please don’t hesitate to contact me.

Questions About Translation

Can I deliver documents for translation in person?
Yes, this is possible; however, please arrange an appointment in advance.

Do you certify translations that someone else has completed?
No, I don’t. As a publicly appointed and sworn translator for English, I can only certify translations that I have personally prepared.

How much does a translation cost?
Translation costs depend on the type of text. I follow the guidelines of the German Judicial Remuneration and Compensation Act (JVEG):

 

  • Base rate: €1.80 per standard line (55 characters, including spaces).

  • Increased rate: €1.95 per standard line for non-electronic or non-editable texts.

  • Special circumstances: €2.10 per standard line for texts requiring technical terms, urgent processing, or poor legibility.
     

In some cases, I also offer per-page or project-based pricing. If you send me the documents with your inquiry, I’ll review them and quickly provide you with a tailored quote.
 

What languages do you translate into?
I primarily translate into German, following the native-speaker principle. On request, I can translate into my B-languages if the text is within my areas of expertise. In these cases, quality assurance is always carried out with the four-eyes principle by working with qualified native-speaker colleagues.

 

Which languages do you offer certified translations for?
I provide certified translations between German and English.

 

How quickly can you complete a translation?
The turnaround time depends on my current workload. That said, I’ll respond to your inquiry within 24 hours to give you a clear timeline and a binding response.

 

Can you provide certified translations digitally?
Yes! On request, I can deliver certified translations as PDF files with a qualified electronic signature (QES). This signature meets all legal standards and is accepted by many authorities just like a physical original. However, I recommend checking with the relevant authority (especially abroad) to ensure they accept this type of signature.

 

Do you also offer proofreading or editing?
Not usually. I only take on proofreading or editing in exceptional cases, and primarily for fellow professionals as part of quality assurance.

Questions about Interpreting

What is the difference between a translator and an interpreter?

A translator works with written content, transferring it from one language to another in written form. An interpreter, on the other hand, deals with spoken language, conveying messages orally.

How much does interpreting cost?

It’s difficult to give a general answer to this, as interpreting fees depend on various factors. In Germany, fees are typically charged as daily rates, which is also how I calculate my services. These rates cover not only the actual interpreting but also thorough preparation and travel time for a workday of up to 8 hours. Additional costs may include standby time, extended working hours, travel on the day before, as well as travel expenses and allowances, if applicable. I’d be happy to discuss your specific event format in a personal phone consultation and provide a tailored quote.

What conference technology is needed for interpreting?

For simultaneous interpreting, you’ll usually need at least one professional interpreting booth, depending on the number of interpreter teams required. These booths are equipped with consoles, headphones, microphones, lighting, and any other necessary equipment for your event. If your venue doesn’t already have booths installed, I can help by coordinating with a trusted technology partner and assisting you in choosing the best technical setup for your event.

Consecutive, liaison, or negotiation interpreting usually doesn’t require complex technical equipment.

Do you offer Remote Simultaneous Interpreting (RSI)?

Remote Simultaneous Interpreting (RSI), sometimes called remote or video interpreting, is not a service I currently offer.
